Trailer

The FMX trailers are traditionally created by students of the Institute of Animation, Effects and Digital Postproduction at Filmakademie Baden-W├╝rttemberg. The 2011 trailer "A Maize" was created by Falko Paeper, Roman Kaelin und Florian Wittmann. Thank you!

Falko Paeper: "The idea behind the film came from an interest in how people react when confronted with something new and strange. The popcorn symbolizes the stranger and how in this movie it is unexpected and sudden. The fear of the unknown can be as big as the end - due to human curiosity.

People have responded very positively to the film - it does not feature the usual international cities- but Stuttgart, the variety of locations used in the film showcase Stuttgart's classical and Modern architecture.

The popcorn effect was implemented with Autodesk Softimage XSI and the renderer Mental Ray. Softimage ICE was used to develop the background and provided certain crowd scenes or the bends of complex geometry/buildings. This was quite impressive and good for 3D software. The biggest difficulty we prepared was the combination of displacement and subsurface scatteting in mental ray. The computers required a lot of computing power and memory to perform these tasts. We decided to use Pixologic Zbrush in the popcorn model - created according to the specific needs."

FMX is funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing of the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg, the City of Stuttgart and the MFG Film Funding, taking place in cooperation with VES Visual Effects Society, ACM SIGGRAPH and the World Building Institute, supported by Animation Media Cluster Region Stuttgart (AMCRS), AMD, AutodeskBackstage, Epic Games and Mackevision. FMX is an event by the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg, organized by the Animationsinstitut, hosting the Animation Production Day (APD), a joint venture with the Festival of Animated Film Stuttgart (ITFS).
